Mwanza is the closest city to the western Serengeti. Ndabaka Gate is about four hours away, which means a morning start puts you in the park before lunch.
Most safari traffic enters from Arusha in the east, which is a long way from the western corridor and a long way from the Grumeti. Starting from Mwanza changes the trip: you are at Ndabaka Gate in around four hours, and between roughly May and July the migration is crossing the Grumeti right there — while the eastern side of the park is comparatively quiet.
A safari vehicle is not just a 4x4 with a bigger badge. The cars we fit for the parks carry a pop-up roof hatch so you can stand and photograph over the roofline, a cooler box between the seats, a roof rack and a dual battery so the cooler keeps running with the engine off. Underneath, they are full-time low-range 4WD on high-clearance suspension, because the park tracks in the wet season are a genuine test and a soft-roader is the wrong tool.
You can take the vehicle self-drive or with a driver-guide. Self-drive is cheaper and works well if you have done this before; a driver-guide who has run the western corridor hundreds of times will find considerably more, and knows where the cats sit in the heat of the afternoon. Park entry fees are separate and paid at the gate.
One piece of planning advice. During the migration months, June to September, the roof-hatch vehicles book out first — we ask for two to three weeks of notice in that window. Outside it, a few days is normally enough.
Stand up to photograph over the roofline, on suspension and gearing built for wet-season park tracks.
Cold water for four days straight — the second battery keeps the cooler running with the engine off.
The western gate, not the long haul from Arusha. Leave after breakfast, be in the park by lunch.
Both available on every safari vehicle. Park entry fees are separate and paid at the gate.
Every vehicle is available self-drive or with a professional driver. Rates are quoted per trip — tell us the dates and the route.

Ndabaka Gate, on the western edge of the park, is about 145 km from Mwanza — roughly four hours. It is the closest gate to any major city in Tanzania, which is why a morning departure gets you into the park the same day.
For game viewing and photography, it is the single feature that changes the experience most — you stand and shoot over the roofline instead of through a window. Ask for a safari-fitted vehicle when you book; there are a limited number of them.
Broadly May to July, when the herds cross the Grumeti. That is also when the safari-fitted vehicles book out first, so two to three weeks of notice is sensible between June and September.
No. Park entry and any concession fees are separate and paid at the gate. The rental covers the vehicle, and the driver-guide if you take one.
Yes. Take a vehicle with genuine low-range 4WD and the roof hatch, and plan the days so that you are not driving between towns after dark. Many clients do exactly this.
